IRON CURTAIN Competitive Gaming Platform

Licences

Licences & Credits

Last updated 14 September 2026

Iron Curtain is built on two decades of work by the Command & Conquer community. This page names that work, who wrote it, the licence each part carries, and where to get its source. Where a licence obliges us to do something, we do it here rather than bury it in a folder.

Iron Curtain supplies no game files. We distribute nothing belonging to Electronic Arts or Westwood Studios. The executable our extensions attach to is a copy of your own gamemd.exe, made on your machine at install time.

1. Components we distribute

Iron Curtain Spawner (IronCurtain-Spawner.dll)

A derivative of the CnCNet yrpp-spawner, modified and rebuilt by us. It is not an official CnCNet build and is not endorsed by the CnCNet project. Copyright © 2022–present CnCNet, licensed GPL-3.0-or-later; our changes do not alter that.

Complete corresponding source, including our modifications: spawner-source.zip — a direct download, no charge and no request needed. Upstream: github.com/CnCNet/yrpp-spawner.

Phobos

Engine extension for Yuri's Revenge, redistributed unmodified. Copyright © The Phobos Contributors, 2020–2026, licensed LGPL-3.0-or-later (the version we ship, v0.4.0.2). Source: github.com/Phobos-developers/Phobos.

Ares

Engine extension for Yuri's Revenge, redistributed unmodified. Copyright © The Ares Contributors. Source and licence: github.com/Ares-Developers/Ares.

Syringe

Runtime DLL injector that loads the engine extensions, redistributed unmodified. Copyright © 2008–2017 Patrick Dinklage, DCoder and AlexB; maintained since 2025 by the Phobos Developers. Licensed LGPL-3.0-or-later. Source: github.com/Phobos-developers/Syringe.

cnc-ddraw (ddraw.dll)

DirectDraw replacement that lets the game run correctly on modern Windows, redistributed unmodified. Copyright © 2010–2024 FunkyFr3sh, licensed GPL-3.0-or-later. It incorporates work from DDrawCompat, copyright © 2015–2024 narzoul. Source: github.com/FunkyFr3sh/cnc-ddraw.

KCP

Reliable-UDP protocol library, licensed MIT. Copyright © 2014 linwei (skywind3000). Source: github.com/skywind3000/kcp.

2. Getting the source

For every GPL and LGPL component above, the complete corresponding source is available from the same place, and in the same way, as the binary you received — which is what section 6(d) of the GPL requires. For our modified spawner that is the direct link above. The other components are redistributed exactly as their projects published them, so each project's own repository is the corresponding source.

If any link here stops working, write to source@ironcurtains.net and we will supply the source directly, to anyone who possesses the software, for at least three years from the date they received it.

3. Acknowledgements

Iron Curtain stands on community work. Red Alert 2 has had no official online service for over twenty years; that the game is still playable at all is the result of people who built and gave away the tools, for free, for a long time.

CnCNet kept the game online for a generation of players and wrote the spawner our own build descends from. Ares and Phobos extended an engine that was never meant to be extended. Syringe is how any of it loads at all. cnc-ddraw is why it renders on a modern machine. We are grateful to all of them, and we would rather say so plainly than treat it as a licensing formality.

Iron Curtain is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated in cooperation with Electronic Arts, Westwood Studios, the CnCNet project, or any of the projects named on this page. Their names appear here only to identify whose work we use.

4. Our own work

The Iron Curtain client, launcher, engine extension, matchmaking, ladder and website are our own original work and are not licensed for reuse or redistribution. See our Terms of Service.
